JW Black Label whisky: the 12 year old that carries the name

Johnnie Walker Black Label is a blend of around 30 single malt and grain whiskies, every one of them at least 12 years old, and it is the Johnnie Walker Scotch whisky most Australians mean when they ask for a Johnnie Walker. Expect dried fruit, vanilla and a lick of Talisker and Caol Ila smoke at the finish, at 40% alc/vol. We carry the standard bottling alongside the regional Origin series (Speyside, Lowlands and Islay Origin, each a Black Label built from one region’s malts), the Icons and Air-Link limited designs and the 200ml flask. The Chivas Regal 12 comparison comes up constantly: Chivas is softer and sweeter, Black Label smokier and drier, and they cost about the same. Is Johnnie Walker a Scotch or a whiskey? And is there a Johnnie Walker single malt?

Both, and no. Johnnie Walker is a blended Scotch whisky: it is whisky (spelt without the e, as all Scotch is), distilled and matured in Scotland for at least three years and blended from a mix of single malt and grain whiskies, under rules set by the Scotch Whisky Association. It has been blended since 1820, when John Walker began marrying casks behind his grocery counter in Kilmarnock, and the striding man has walked on the label since 1908. There is no such bottle as a Johnnie Walker single malt, but the 93 malts that make the blend what it is, Cardhu, Caol Ila, Clynelish, Talisker and the Classic Malts, are all sold on their own in our Malts Behind the Blend collection, which is the answer to that search. How to drink Johnnie Walker: neat, with cola, dry ginger or in a highball

Red Label and Double Black are built for mixing: two parts dry ginger ale to one part whisky with a wedge of lime, or Red Label and cola if that is the house pour. Black Label works both ways, neat or over one large rock, and yes, you can mix Black Label with coke without offending anyone who knows whisky. Green, Gold and the 18 Year Old are sippers; Blue Label is served neat, ideally with a glass of iced water alongside to reset the palate. For cocktails, a Johnnie Walker Black Old Fashioned or a Highball with soda and lemon shows the blend better than anything more complicated. An opened bottle does not go bad, but it does fade: finish it within a year or two and keep it upright, out of sunlight.
